In the Fall of 1997; our 7-year-old daughter told her parents point blank, “We have to get a computer!” She sounded like she could not compete any longer without a real computer. The profit motives had invaded the second grade elementary school classroom and infected our daughter.

A few months later in a penny saver I found an ad for computers. I had the shop in LA custom build our first real computer. I paid $2300.00 for a W-95 system. Approximately, a 300Ghz processor, 6GB HDD with perhaps 2-128 MB memory sticks. I failed to notice that the W-95 install disk was not included in the delivery, nor did I understand then why I would need it later.

    I named our computer, Hope.

By 1997 AOL free trial disks were arriving in the mail every month, so we went online (dial-up), but no one here had time for “The Information Highway”. Our computer was running "Hover" on Windows '95 all the way to bed time.

By 1998 we were going online with some AOL free hours, we also tried CompuServe. We had EarthLink.net for a few months just to get a free net cam, which is still in the box, somewhere in the piles of legacy equipment.

I took our computer in to the repair shop about a year after we bought it. The repairman told me it was such a simple fix that the he would not charge me for it. He said, “I'll catch you next time.”

The next time, about 6 months later, it needed more serious repairs. After it had been in the repair shop about a week they called to say that the hard drive needed to be reformatted (wiped) and that would mean a total loss of all data. The bill was $95, and when I got it back it was not fixed either, so I took it right back in to see if I could use the ninety-day guarantee they had on repairs, to get it fixed properly.

After a few more days went by, I was told that they found it needed a new processor and a new power supply and that would cost $324 more. Ouch!

That was the last time I ask anyone else work on our computer. After it had been in the repair shop almost all of November 1999, I was glad to get it back and I was very busy reinstalling all of our software. It was usable now, but it still had problems.

When I uninstalled EarthLink.net it lost some files needed to display Web pages and we could not get back on the Internet. I tried reinstalling Windows a few times from two different disks I had bought to fix the problem, but even after struggling with it for weeks; I could not get the computer dial up router connected to the Internet.

We finally solved the web page displaying and Internet connection problem by buying a new bare bones computer, about $600.00 from TigerDirect.com. I named it Jewel, before we had heard about that pop singer.

On the second day our second computer was set up, I used Norton Utilities to optimize the registry. When that process restarted the computer, the computer could not find its hard drive.

With tech help from Tiger tech, I reformatted the hard drive, losing all the pre-installed software and only regaining 6 GB of the 13GB hard drive because that is all the Tiger technician on the telephone could get to format.

Two years later, I had learned enough about computers to format the full 13 GB and did it successfully. After reformatting I deliberated about our computers, and understood the necessary omitted steps that were necessary to avoid those terrible waste of time and data loss enigmas.

After about two years of our being able to go online, there was a lot of complaining, about not being able to use the phone, with our daughter playing online computer games on dialup service. I decided to resolve some of the conflicts by getting a DSL service.

It took about ten days to get the hardware stuff delivered, then three days of cussing to set it all up, my daughter helped me to correct some mistakes, and get the router to function correctly.

For another five days I was upset, tying to get out of the contract without having to pay the $200 early cancellation fee. Another sales pitch I fell for, surmising from what I read, that I had up to ten days of online use in which to cancel, if I was unsatisfied. My credit card agreed with me.

After we had another ‘high-speed’ Internet for about a month, I began to appreciate some of the benefits. An improvement in our download speeds, and more than one computer could be on the Internet at the same time. Oh, and now the telemarketers could get through to us on our phones.

Some years later, I went back to dialup for awhile, but then I bought a promotional Yahoo! - AT&T deal.

When I retired a few years later, I started watching YouTube videos for entertainment; the buffering interrupted my viewing. AT&T could only provide a basic DSL speed of about 63 kbps, through my phone line.

Annoyed, I dumped them for DSL Extreme to get 162 kbps. By that time DSL Extreme had corrected many of their earlier problems that we all heard about.

After several years or so, DSL Extreme became annoying again with policy and contract payment requirements. Then DSL Extreme became Truestream fiber internet, with Truestream price increases.

I walked into an AT&T store and bought broadband internet service to avoid having to get Truestream, that required an indoor and outdoor installation.

A year later when AT&T jacked the price. I got T-Mobile broadband. Fifty dollars flat fee. Great, except for a 50 GB data limit takes me back to dial-up speeds when I use IT up.

What to do? Oh my, what'll I do?

A long time ago, I bought a used HDD from human-I-T on eBay. Somehow or other I got an email offer or something, and then a few weeks later I was online affordably again with a T10 Mobile Hotspot. Without data limits, and for the old DSL price of $14.99 plus the equipment costs. There have been 6 MBs speeds briefly on some downloads. Very fast for this old timer.

The Information Highway is a Troll Road, I mean toll road, run by the Software Mafia, and the equipment manufacturers, for profits.

I must have been a very good boy, to avoid the Troll Road's lowest price of $600.00 per year.

I've been using this for over a year. I lost it, and customer service was super fast, polite, efficient. It was replaced and service resumed within about 48 hours of placing my order. The only problems I encountered this year related to a terrible storm, which affected cell towers during Hurricane Helene, but service was back up surprisingly fast after the storm. This hotspot gadget works perfectly everywhere I go. Thank you for great service AND a great, affordable product!
